Completed in late 2017, this 3-million-pound contract was designed to complement the existing offerings at Belfast International Airport, in conjunction with the developer Moorfield Contracts and the Airport Authority. Located within walking distance of the main terminal, it provides refuelling facilities and convenience food offerings, which include a 4-pump fuel forecourt, arranged in a starter gate configuration, 2400 ft² M&S Foodhall, and 4 food franchises with a drive-through facility, all arranged around a central, open plan, dining mall.
Grounded to the site, through the use of smooth rendered walls, random rubble stone, and a masonry drum as the main entrance portal, the building features extensive overhanging roofs, to provide both the world-weary traveller and the local motorist, with shelter and a warm welcome. The over sailing roofs echo the wings of a modern aircraft, which combined with the use of lightweight materials such as zinc standing seam, planar glazing and extruded aluminium brise soleil at high level, suspended via stainless steel yacht rigging, create a light and airy interior, to evoke the spirt of flight and serve as a fitting pre-cursor, to the contemporary airport experience.
